Tonnage surveys are required for Part 1 registration, recommended by the RYA for vessels sailing beyond UK waters mainly for legal reasons: it means the vessel must be treated as British and can assist with VAT issues by increasing the chances of referral back to HMRC.
Tonnage measurement is an ancient approach to calculating the cargo holding capacity of a boat, and is used regardless of the boat's design or owner's intentions. The measurement achieved is not related to the boat's weight or displacement.
Compass Marine Yacht Surveys carry out tonnage surveys on behalf of clients, though application must be done via the YDSA or MECAL certifying authorities. Fees are set by the MCA.
