Compass Marine Yacht Surveys offers a range of services for wooden boat owners and purchasers including comprehensive pre-purchase surveys.  Our pre-purchase surveys include:

  •  A thorough inspection of the hull structure: planking, keel strengthening, fastenings, deck and coachroof , all openings in the hull and deck including all portlights and deadlights, hatches, companionways and through hull fittings
  •  Inspections of the rudder and steering, stern gear, engine and fuel installation
  •  Inspections of the rig, as far as possible using an electronic rig tester where appropriate
  •  An assessment of the safety and other equipment including mooring and anchoring, bilge pumps, firefighting and life saving equipment etc
  •  Accommodation and on board-systems including the gas electrical and water systems
  •  A detailed report is provided with every survey
  •  A list any repairs or maintenance work needed (ranked according to their urgency)
  •  Advice on any specialist investigations required
  •  A chance to discuss any aspect of the report with me on the phone
  •  Additional survey options see below

A full rigging surveyis included for no additional charge if the mast is unstepped and laid out .

We want to maximise the usefulness of your survey. To achieve this we do the following:

  •  Discuss all aspects of your boating plans to tailor our survey to your needs
  •  Take steps before the survey to maximise access to all necessary parts of the yacht and so minimise the number of times we have to say we could not inspect a certain part because we could not gain access
  •  Where possible we include inspections afloat, ashore and in the slings
  •  Use a range of tools and non-destructive testing equipment to maximise the amount of useful factual information contained in the report

Alongside the main survey we offer the following additional options:

  •  Valuation a balanced opinion on the market value of the yacht
  •  Oil Analysis an engine oil analysis (useful if it has been done previously or will be repeated)
  •  Sea trial

Sea trials provide useful additional information, especially about the engine, navigation equipment, sails and rigging and if the boat has been stored ashore, inspecting her while afloat will also provide useful information.
